The people of 480 BC — they’re just like us!
On the left is a Greek discus thrower in bronze, which you can currently see at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Gallery 153.
On the right is Germany’s Robert Harting, who won gold for discus throwing this week in the 2012 Games. He ripped off his shirt in celebration and then ran an impromptu 100 meter hurdle lap. Read more about it here.
(We should note that Mr. Harting’s Greek predecessor started the competition with no shirt.)
We wonder if some modern day artist will create a depiction of this moment so that people in 2500 years or so will be able to remember it…
